In the earliest efforts to fly, people tried to copy birds. But their arms were not strong enough to flap wings. Next came balloons, but they drifted with the wind. Gliders, too, needed the right kind of wind. Orville wright made the first successful flight in a motor powered airplane, in 1903. afterv that, airplanes developed fast. In 1919 captain jhon alcock and lieutenant Arthur whitten brown made the first non-stop flight across the atlantic, in 16 hours. Today, concorde flies the same distance in three hours.
