GREAT WRITERS

                
                                   GREAT WRITERS

There are several ways of telling if an author is just good or truly great writer.                    One is if their books or plays are still read long after they are dead. Another is if their work is widely read in other countries and other languages. Many of the greatest authors are admired by other writers and have influenced the way they write. Every year, one of the world’s great writers is honored by being awarded the Nobel prize for Literature.   

THE FIRST NOVELIST
A noblewoman, Murasaki Shikibu (C.A.D. 978-C. 1014) lived at the court of Empress Akiko of Japan. She wrote “The Tale of Genji”, about the loves of a prince. It is said to be the world’s first novel. She also left a fascinating diary.

CHINESE PLAYWRIGHT
Cao Yu (1910-96) began his career as an actor. Later he became a teacher of drama and wrote China’s first Western-style plays. He also translated some of William Shakespeare’s works.

MAGICAL WRITER
Gabriel Garcia Marquez (born 1928) writes strange and magical novels featuring real people, angels, ghosts, and talking animals. Many of his stories are set in an imaginary jungle town in Colombia, where he was born.

WORLD    FAMOUS WRITER
The English playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an actor and theater manager. He wrote 37 plays and many poems. Many people feel that he is the greatest writer the world has ever known. His work has been translated into most language.
